Purpose: To compare stereoacuity measured in a natural space with that measured using an instrument in a distant dynamic stereopsis test and to analyze the correlation coefficient between the two measured values.
Methods: Twentyfive subjects (10 males and 15 females) with a mean age of 23.64¡¾1.58 years participated in the test. The refractive error of the subjects was fully corrected, and the viewing angle in the dynamic stereopsis test was 10¡Æ. At a 2.5-m distance, fixative targets for the test were three rods and three light sources. At a 25-m distance, fixative tergets for the test were three penguins (subjects dressed as penguins).
Results: The measured stereoacuity at a 25-m distance in the natural space (8.39¡¾3.61 sec of arc) was significantly (p<0.001, p<0.001) higher than that measured in the test using three rods (38.28¡¾45.81 sec of arc) and that using three light sources (33.33¡¾23.12 sec of arc) at a 2.5-m distance. The correlation coefficient between stereoacuity measured at a 25-m distance in a natural space and that measured at a 2.5-m distance was very low (r = 0.010, r = 0.174). Conclusions: The values measured by the stereopsis test using three rods at a 2.5-m distance do not accurately reflect stereoscopic ability in a natural space, and it is possible to compensate for this disadvantage by increasing the test distance.
